The Wheels on the Bus

Summer. It used to be the best time of the year. All about tennis camp and tuna fish sandwiches with alfalfa sprouts and crushes on the teen counselors. And, it was humidity free. But that was summer in California, when I was 10. And if you have never had alfalfa sprouts on a tuna fish sandwich you are missing out.

But this is summer in New York which, basically, is all about survival. It is hard to come into work and already want/need to take anther shower. Or a nap. Or both. Starbucks gets it; they are now doing these $2.00 cold drink coupons with your morning coffee redeemable after 2pm. The heat makes for hot and sleepy employees. For instance, I can barely remember what happened yesterday, resulting in today feeling like Monday all day. (Ahhh, details to come but yesterday was most excellent- let’s just say I got to be a a Memphis-related photo shoot and it was awesome. Even though I basically sweat my face off. Why do I still put makeup on the morning?)

The new game that we are playing in the Memphis production world is “I Spy.” What we are looking for? The new Memphis Buses- because Summer on Broadway is all about outdoor advertising. Which makes sense because itis the time of year when people are actually outdoors. Melting.

But when you book “bus sides” as they are called in the biz, they don’t tell you what the routes of the buses are so it is all about being vigilant when melting walking down the street.

Tegan and I squealed in a cab (getting respite from the heat) on 8th Avenue Saturday seeing a double decker, neither one of us fast enough to snap a picture. And we are not the only ones playing the game. From producers to designers, press agents to associates, we have all been emailing back and forth when sightings occur- here’s a sampling of what I am talking about.

Email: Thursday, 9:22pm
On 88th and CPW as I got off the subway, looking good!

Email: Monday, 3:09pm
“Meant to write on Saturday to tell you that I saw multiple bus sides. Back and forth on 23rd St and going down 7th Ave.”

Email: Monday, 10:30am
“Not the best photo, but I snapped this with my phone. I saw a bunch of these over
the weekend.”
